Damascus governor vows to rebuild national unity, public trust
The new governor of Damascus, Maher Marwan, emphasized that Syria’s new administration is prioritizing national unity and restoring public trust in government institutions.
In an interview with Anadolu Agency (AA), Marwan stressed that Syria seeks to rebuild itself as a unified nation after decades of sectarian divisions entrenched by the former regime. He praised the Syrian people for demonstrating extraordinary unity following the liberation of cities from regime control.
“Syria was a vibrant mosaic that the previous regime worked to shatter. We are now committed to restoring this social cohesion,” he said.
Marwan acknowledged the challenges of the transitional phase, particularly the deep mistrust between the public and government institutions, which were previously accused of self-serving practices.
To address this, the administration is committed to improving institutional efficiency, enhancing oversight, and modernizing services through digital technologies.
Marwan underscored the urgent need to raise public sector salaries, currently averaging USD 15 to USD 20 per month, which he described as a key driver of widespread corruption. A new salary scale, including increases of up to 400 percent, is set to be implemented next month.
The governor highlighted the administration’s efforts to address critical issues, including electricity shortages, road repairs, sanitation, and park maintenance. Collaboration with the Ministry of Economy is underway to develop infrastructure projects through public-private partnerships.
Marwan also noted plans to bring back industries that had left Syria due to the previous regime’s policies. The administration aims to create a secure investment environment that directly benefits citizens.
Furthermore, the governor affirmed the administration’s dedication to supporting social freedoms, regulated by law and the constitution. Equality for all, regardless of gender or sect, will be central to the next phase, ensuring everyone is governed under a single legal framework.
Marwan emphasized the importance of youth in shaping Syria’s future, outlining plans to attract investments that create jobs for young men and women. He announced training programs aimed at enhancing their social and professional roles in rebuilding the country.
